A connected car is a car that uses different communication technologies to communicate with the driver, other cars, infrastructure on the road, and the cloud. This technology ensures vehicle safety and efficiency.

A grid (Electric Grid) is a network of systems that deliver electric energy from the power station to the consumers. These systems include transformers, transmission lines, and meters. There are many sources of electricity including hydroelectric, wind, solar, nuclear, and natural gas. These sources generate electricity at different voltages. These voltages are stepped up to high voltages to increase the efficiency of power transmission to the consumers. As the electric power approaches the final consumer, the voltage is stepped down to low voltages suitable to most electrical appliances. This voltage is mostly 240 volts. From the power plant to the final consumer, the electric current passes through various systems including transformers, meters, and switches. These systems make up the electric grid.

The internet of things is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles, buildings, and other items with network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. It creates opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy, and economic benefit. It finds numerous applications in the areas of smart grids, smart homes, intelligent transportation, and smart cities. This research presents a discussion on the internet of things and its applications in smart cities. The emerging technology of IoT makes smart cities efficient and responsive.
